7 Tips for Choosing the Right Interior Paint Color

It may not be obvious to most but choosing the right interior paint color is a serious matter. When you select a shade that you love the first time around, you will save a lot of money and time remoding your room or house. By picking the best interior paint, you will also successfully give a room or your entire home a fresh new look.

To ensure you select the right paint colors for your home on your next house painting project, follow the tips below:

#1. Think about the colors you like

As the homeowner, you will always be the one surrounded by and will be seeing the colors in the different rooms of your home. As such, you need to ensure you will like the hues you’ll be seeing every day by choosing a shade you already like.

Keep in mind, though, that when you start with the colors you like, you don’t have to stick with conventional color schemes. You can use your favorite hue as the base or to create a color scheme around it.

#2. Consider the mood you want the room to have

Color plays a critical role in evoking or enhancing the ambiance in a room. As such, when picking a color, you have to know what mood you want the room to radiate.

For instance, if you want your bedroom to be relaxing and soothing, you need to choose a soft cool or neutral color. In case you want something dramatic and intimate for your room, you will do well to go pick a strong or intense dark hue.

#3. Factor in the light in the room

The type and amount of lighting the room have will affect the way you see the color.

Natural daylight shows the truest version of any color. Incandescent lighting, on the other hand, makes colors seem warmer whereas fluorescent lighting makes colors seem cooler or cold.

As such, before buying paint, know what kind of lighting fixture you have in the room. Make sure you use the light test box to test your color chips as well to ensure you pick out the right shade for your target room.

#4. Find inspiration online

If you are still having a hard time narrowing down your list of the best possible paint colors to use, go online to find inspiration.

Visit social media sites such as Pinterest and Instagram that offer thousands of interior color ideas and inspirations. The websites of paint manufacturers and home improvement blogs also offer numerous ideas with their room vignettes. You can also get practical and interesting ideas from interior design websites

Additionally, many of these sites have apps or tools which will allow you to combine different hues and see how they will actually look before you buy the paint, mix, and use them to paint a wall or ceiling.

#5. Get your color inspiration from a print in the room

You can also pick the right interior paint color by looking at the print fabrics in the room. Your throw pillows, bedding, sofa, and table linens can provide you with an amazing color scheme.

If you want to create an accent wall, look to the boldest colors in the print for ideas. In case you want a hue that is more subtle, or if you plan to paint a large space, get inspiration from the color in the small details of your print fabric.

If possible, take a swatch of the fabric with you to the paint store for color reference.

#6.Test your paint color

Once you have decided on which shades to use, buy small cans of paint in the different colors you’ve chosen. Get a white foam core board and apply two coats of paint on a small portion of the board.

Next, place the painted board in different areas of the room and look at it from various angles and times of the day. If you like how the color looks under these different conditions, you won’t go wrong with choosing it.

#7. Work with a color consultant

Lastly, if you want a new color scheme but you’re still unsure which interior paint colors to choose, color consultants will point you in the right direction. They will provide you with paint color ideas to sample. They can also customize a color palette specifically for your home.

Make sure you already have a list of paint color ideas or schemes when you meet your color consultant so that you can discuss what you have in mind with him or her.

Ask your consultant if he or she can visit your home at a specific time of day as well. Doing so will allow the consultant to see the challenges that the natural and artificial lighting poses for the room so he or she can recommend the best paint color.

Selecting a color (or colors) for your home interior can be exciting and scary at the same time. But by following the tips above, you can avoid making costly guesswork, and you will have a room and home that you’ll really love.
